Light-burned magnesia powder, abbreviated as light-burned magnesia powder, is an active magnesium oxide obtained by calcining magnesite, brucite, and magnesium hydroxide extracted from seawater or brine at about 800~1000℃. Light-burned magnesia powder is a light yellow, light brown powder with a particle size mostly below 100 mesh. The periclase crystals are very small, density 3.07~3.22g/cm3, large lattice constant, many lattice defects, loose and brittle texture, porous structure, high reaction activity, easy to undergo solid-phase reaction or sintering, and reacts with water to form Mg(OH)2 and harden, with bonding ability.
Selecting the calcination method and controlling the light-burning temperature are important means to obtain good activity. As the calcination temperature increases, the specific surface area of MgO decreases significantly. When the temperature exceeds 1000℃, the recrystallization speed of MgO accelerates, the dispersion drops sharply, and the activity deteriorates. Using different calcination methods and calcination equipment at the same temperature is also an important factor affecting the activity of MgO. For example, calcination in boiling furnaces or suspension furnaces, causing rapid decomposition in an instant, can obtain active light-burned magnesia powder. Using tunnel kilns or reflection kilns for large blocks, with long calcination time, often causes over-burning on the surface and under-burning in the interior, both of which will reduce the activity of the light-burned magnesia powder. Calcining granular magnesite in a rotary kiln has a situation between the two, and can also maintain good activity of the obtained light-burned magnesia powder.
Light-burned magnesia powder is a raw material with medium alkalinity and chemical activity. In addition to being used as refractory and cementitious materials, it is also applied in other industrial fields. In addition, the development of converter slag splashing and furnace protection technology has further expanded the application range of light-burned magnesia powder.
